When the American Minister, Mr. Hiram B. Otis, bought the Canterville castle, everyone said he was making a foolish mistake, because the castle was inhabited by spirits.
Lord Canterville himself, moreover, in his scrupulous honesty, while discussing the conditions of the purchase, had made it his duty to warn Mr. Otis:
“We ourselves,” Lord Canterville had said, “haven't lived there since the time when the widowed Duchess of Belton fainted from fright, feeling two skeletal hands rest on her shoulders; nor did she ever recover her health after such a fright.”
The event happened while she was getting dressed for lunch. I feel obliged to add, dear sir, that the ghost was seen by many people of the family still living, as well as by the Reverend Augusto Dampier, rector of the parish and associate doctor of the Royal College of Belford. After the tragic event that happened to the Duchess, none of our young maids wanted to stay with us any longer, and many nights Lady Canterville could not sleep because of the mysterious noises coming from the hallway and the library.
— Mylord, — aveva risposto il Ministro, — comprerò i mobili, compreso il fantasma nell'inventario.
“Mylord,” the Minister had replied, “I will buy the furniture, including the ghost in the inventory.”
I come from a modern country where you can buy everything that for money you can have, and with our young, lively, and strong ones who make champions of all in your old world, who kidnap your best actors, your best leading ladies, I am sure that if there were still a true ghost in Europe, it would not have escaped being captured to put it in one of our public museums or to parade it through the busiest streets as a spectacle.
“The ghost exists,” Lord Canterville had replied smiling, “although it has not accepted the offers of your impresarios, even among the most enterprising.” It has been known for more than three centuries: it goes back precisely to 1574; it never fails to show itself when a death is about to happen in the family.
Bah! The house doctor does no differently, Lord Canterville. But, my dear sir, a ghost nowadays can no longer exist and I believe that the laws of nature will make no exceptions in favor of the English aristocracy...
— Certamente voi siete molto positivi in America, — aveva risposto lord Canterville, senza esser riuscito a capire l'ultima osservazione del signor Otis.
“Certainly you are very positive in America,” Lord Canterville had replied, without managing to understand Mr. Otis's last remark. “But if you like having a ghost in your house, all the better: just remember I warned you.”
A few weeks later, the purchase was completed and at the end of the season the minister and his family settled in Canterville. Mrs. Otis, who as a girl, with the name Miss Lucrezia R. Tappen, on East 52nd Street, had been one of the great beauties of New York; she was still an attractive middle-aged woman, with proud eyes and a very regular profile.
Many American ladies, when they are far from their native country, take on the appearance of people struck by a chronic illness and imagine that this is a form of distinction in Europe; but Mrs. Otis had never fallen into such an error: she had an excellent constitution and an extraordinary exuberance of vitality.
Truly English in every respect, she could rightly be held up as an example to support the thesis that the English have everything in common with the Americans, except the language.
His firstborn, baptized Washington by his relatives in a moment of patriotism, which he never ceased to deplore enough, was a blonde, well-built young man, who had He submitted his application to the diplomatic career, leading the cotillon at the Newport club for three consecutive seasons, and even in London he was considered a top-notch dancer. The gardenia was her only beauty: apart from that, she was perfectly balanced.
Mrs. Virginia E. Otis was a young girl of fifteen, quick and pretty like a blackcap, with an expression of frankness in her large turquoise eyes. She was a skilled amazon; riding her pony she had beaten Lord Bilton in a race, making two laps of the park and arriving first by a length and a half in front of the statue of Achilles.
This had caused the enthusiasm of the young Duke of Cheshire, who had immediately proposed to marry her. And his tutors, that very evening, had had to send him to Loton completely desperate.
After Virginia came two twins, commonly known as Stars and Stripes, two dear boys who with the worthy minister formed the only true republicans of the family.
