"It is a peculiar apparatus," said the officer to the explorer and looked over with a somewhat admiring glance the apparatus, which was nevertheless well known to him. The traveler seemed to have followed the invitation of the commander only out of politeness, who had asked him to attend the execution of a soldier who had been sentenced for disobedience and insulting the superior. The interest in this execution was probably not very great even in the penal colony. At least here in the deep, sandy, small valley enclosed by bare slopes all around, besides the officer and the traveler, there was only the condemned man, a dull-witted, wide-mouthed person with neglected hair and face, and a soldier present. The man held the heavy chain into which the small chains ran, with which the condemned man was bound at the ankles, wrists, and neck, and which also hung together by connecting chains. Moreover, the condemned looked so doggedly submissive that it seemed as if one could let him run free on the slopes and only had to whistle at the start of the execution for him to come.
The traveler had little sympathy for the apparatus and walked visibly almost indifferent behind the condemned man while the officer took care of the final preparations, sometimes crawling under the deeply embedded apparatus in the ground, sometimes climbing a ladder to inspect the upper parts. These were tasks that one could actually have left to a machinist, but the officer performed them with great zeal, whether he was a special supporter of this apparatus or whether for other reasons the work could not be entrusted to anyone else. "Now everything is ready! " he finally called and climbed down from the ladder. He was extremely exhausted, breathed with his mouth wide open, and had shoved two delicate ladies' handkerchiefs behind the uniform collar. "These uniforms are indeed too heavy for the tropics," said the traveler, instead of inquiring about the device as the officer had expected. "Certainly," said the officer and washed his hands, stained with oil and grease, in a ready water bucket, "but they represent the homeland; we do not want to lose the homeland." “Now take a look at this device,” he immediately added, dried his hands with a cloth, and simultaneously pointed at the device. “Until now, manual work was still necessary, but from now on the device works entirely on its own.” The traveler nodded and followed the officer. He sought to protect himself against all incidents and then said: "Of course disturbances occur; I do hope that none will happen today, after all one must expect them." The
The apparatus is supposed to run continuously for twelve hours. If disturbances do occur, they are only very small ones and they will be fixed immediately.
"Don't you want to sit down?" "he finally asked, pulled one out of a pile of wicker chairs, and offered it to the traveler; the latter could not refuse." He was now sitting at the edge of a pit, into which he cast a fleeting glance. It was not very deep. On one side of the pit, the excavated earth was heaped into a wall; on the other side stood the apparatus. "I don't know," said the officer, "whether the commander has already explained the apparatus to you." The traveler made an uncertain hand gesture; the officer wanted nothing better, for now he himself could explain the device. "This device," he said and took hold of a crank lever, on which he supported himself, "is an invention of our former commander. I immediately took part in the very first attempts and was also involved in all the work until completion.
The credit for the invention, however, belongs entirely to him alone. Have you heard of our former commander? Not? Well, I do not claim too much when I say that the establishment of the entire penal colony is his work. We, his friends, already knew at his death that the establishment of the colony is so self-contained that his successor, even if he has a thousand new plans in his head, will be able to change nothing of the old during many years at least. Our prediction has also come true; the new commander had to recognize it. Too bad you did not know the former commander! – But," the officer interrupted himself, "I am babbling, and his apparatus is right here in front of us. It consists, as you see, of three parts. Over time, somewhat popular names have developed for each of these parts. The lower one is called the bed, the upper one the draftsman, and here the middle, floating part is called the harrow. "The harrow?" The traveler asked.
